Two Calgary restaurants ordered to close for problems with sinks, wastewater

A pair of Calgary establishments were ordered closed by AHS this past weekend, both for failing to have sinks that operated properly.

According to the notice of closure, the Rio Banquet Hall located at 2850 Hopewell Pace N.E. was operating without a valid food handling permit.

While that alone might not have forced an immediate closure, the practices in the kitchen did.

In a report, an AHS inspector found the floor in the dishwashing and kitchen area “was covered in wastewater,” noting that food establishment operators “must ensure that, before operation of the commercial food establishment commences, the commercial food establishment is connected to a lawful and properly operating sewage disposal system.”

The inspector found staff washing dishes in buckets, instead of in the dishwashing sinks, and they failed to use an approved sanitizer.

Staff were washing and transporting the dishes while walking or standing in wastewater on the floor, which was noted as another violation.
