A southern Alberta brewery has been crowned maker of the World’s Best Bavarian Style Hefeweiss at the World Beer Awards.

The winning product, known as Hefe, is brewed by Brauerei Fahr, located south of Calgary in Turner Valley.

Brewery founder Jochen Fahr called the honour overwhelming after learning the news Thursday morning.

“It’s still kind of surreal,” he said.

“We knew we had a good product. But it’s that good, that knocked me out of my socks.”

The first round of judging for the competition took place in Toronto. After beers were ranked in their respective countries, the winners went on to London, U.K. to be judged on the world stage.

Last year, Brauerei Fahr ranked on the national level of the competition, with the Hefe winning best in Canada in the Bavarian style Hefeweiss category.

Fahr said he’s been brewing it for five years, noting the winning submission pairs with “literally anything.”

“From the very beginning, we said it has to be all about the beer,” he said.

“We don’t use preservatives where we don’t have to. We don’t use shortcuts in our beers. We use traditional methods. Our focus for brewing is very much in the brewhouse.

“What separates us is really that attention to detail.”
