A child was rushed to hospital on Tuesday morning after falling from a third-storey window onto concrete below.
EMS spokesman Stuart Brideaux said crews were called to the scene in the 100 block of Skyview Ranch Way N.E. just after 11 a.m.
“On arrival, we assumed care of a female toddler, approximately three years of age, who had sustained a fall from a third-storey window,” said Brideaux.
The girl was taken to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in serious condition, however, Brideaux said her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
Brideaux said while it is unclear what happened in this incident, he reminded Calgarians to check their homes for anything that could allow children access to a window, and to remove that access.
He said devices are available that prevent a window from opening more than 10 cm or four inches, which is more than enough to allow ventilation while also preventing a child from fitting through the window.
He also said screens are not safety devices, and cannot be relied on to withstand the weight of a child.
