A 24-year-old O’Chiese First Nation man is dead after being shot by RCMP.

Rocky Mountain House Mounties responded to a disturbance complaint at a residence on the O’Chiese reserve, about 65 kilometres northwest of Rocky Mountain House on Saturday.

Upon arrival, RCMP said they encountered a “known individual” who returned inside the residence and closed the door. They said a police check confirmed the man hd outstanding warrants.

“Police secured the area and began taking the necessary steps to obtain a warrant to enter the home,” the service said in a statement. “It was at this time the individual exited the home and a confrontation ensued.”

The man was pronounced dead on scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), a watchdog agency tasked with investigating events where serious injury or death may have been caused by police, is on scene.
