Police identified the victim Thursday. The man, David Bawden, 59, of Calgary, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Bawden was walking east in the curb lane of eastbound Memorial Drive, between the Bridgeland and Zoo LRT stations. At 8:37 a.m. on Tuesday, a Volkswagen Jetta pulled over and the victim got inside.
The investigation into the murder is ongoing. Police said they will release the names of the arrested suspects if charges are laid.
“We are investigating the possibility that this was a random attack. While we don’t believe there are additional safety concerns for Calgarians, we are exhausting all measures to locate the suspects,” Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta of the Calgary Police Service homicide unit said in a statement.
The homicide is Calgary’s 27th of 2020.
Police are still seeking to speak with witnesses who were travelling on Memorial Drive between Edmonton Trail and 36th Street N.E. on Tuesday around 8:35 to 8:45 a.m. or anyone with dashcam footage. They are encouraged to contact police through the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234, or the Homicide Tip Line at 403-428-8877.
