The Calgary Fire Department says one person is unaccounted for after a two-alarm fire in the southwest community of Southwood early Tuesday morning.
Crews were called to the scene around 5 a.m. for reports of a fire in the basement of a home in the 10,000 block of Elbow Drive S.W.
Battalion Chief Paul Frederick said it appeared the home had a basement suite. Four people living upstairs and one occupant of the downstairs suite escaped without any injuries.
He said crews were then alerted that a sixth person who normally occupies the downstairs suite was unaccounted for. He said it is unclear if they were in the home at the time the fire started.
Crews entered the basement but were met with high heat and a challenging layout. The firefighters called a mayday and a search team was sent in to assist, however, the initial crew made it out safely on their own
The fire has been extinguished but there is significant damage to the home and basement. A fire investigator is on scene and members of the fire department are also on scene to watch for potential flare-ups.
