Five youths arrested after violent robbery of cellphone shop

Okotoks RCMP say five youths under the age of 18 have been arrested after a robbery at the Rogers Communication store in Okotoks on Monday.

According to police, four youths entered the store at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 and assaulted two employees. They left the store with a large number of cellphones and other electronic devices.

Okotoks RCMP were able to follow them with assistance from Calgary Police Service’s HAWCS unit, which tracked their vehicle to a residence in southeast Calgary. CPS officers arrested five males at the scene.

After executing a search warrant on the residence and vehicle, Calgary RCMP Forensic Identification Services seized more than $70,000 worth of cellphones and electronics.

Five suspects have each been charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of forcible confinement, two counts of uttering threats, mischief under $5,000 and flight from police.

All were remanded into custody and will appear before a judge in Okotoks on Oct. 16. They can’t be named due to their age.
