Two people have died following an early morning crash Sunday on Highway 1 in Strathmore, about 50 kilometres east of Calgary.

Strathmore RCMP and emergency crews responded to the collision on eastbound Highway 1 east of Spruce Park Drive at 4:13 a.m.

RCMP said two vehicles, a Ford Expedition and a Porsche SUV, were involved in the crash. Investigators said the Porsche crashed into the back of the Ford.

EMS crews declared a 33-year-old male passenger of the Ford dead on scene. The 59-year-old female driver of the Ford was transported to hospital where she was declared dead.

A second adult male passenger in the Ford was taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. All three were residents of Wheatland County, the municipal district just east of Calgary.

The adult male driver of the Porsche was also taken to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Mounties diverted eastbound traffic on Highway 1 at the road’s intersection with Spruce Park Drive and Lakeside Boulevard while an RCMP collision analyst investigated the scene of the crash. Detours remained in place until Sunday afternoon.

Alcohol is not thought to be a factor in the crash, RCMP said.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Strathmore RCMP at 403-934-3968.
