The suspicious death of a man found in a parking lot outside a hookah bar in southwest Calgary is being investigated as a homicide, Calgary police say.

Police and emergency responders were called to the parking lot outside Mazaj Loung & Restaurant, located at 9223 Macleod Trail S.W., around 11:20 p.m. on Friday for reports that a man was in medical distress. EMS declared the man dead at the scene.

Investigators with Calgary Police’s homicide unit were quickly assigned to the case due to the suspicious nature of the death.

An autopsy completed Monday has identified the man as Daniel Dudgeon, 32, of Calgary.

“We believe that the victim had spent some time inside the restaurant prior to being killed,” Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm of the homicide unit said in a news release.

Patrons who attended the Mazaj Lounge & Restaurant on Friday between 7 p.m. and closing are being encouraged to contact police, regardless of whether they believe they have information that could help investigators.

“It is extremely likely that other patrons of the restaurant may have critical information that could help investigators solve the case, whether they had an interaction with the victim or not. Information that seems irrelevant or insignificant can often be the piece of information that investigators are missing,” said Chisholm.

Anyone with information or witnesses of the homicide can contact the police at 403-428-8877, the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or

In 2019, a double homicide took place outside of the northeast location of the Mazaj Lounge & Restaurant. It shares a parking lot in the 2400 block of 37 Avenue N.E. with neighbouring businesses.

Two men were found gunned down in that lot in the early morning hours of April 3.

One victim was pronounced dead on scene and the other man succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to hospital.
