A Calgary Police Service officer was killed on New Year’s Eve when he was hit by the driver of a vehicle fleeing a traffic stop in the northeast community of Falconridge.

The unidentified officer had stopped a vehicle in the area of Falconridge Boulevard and Falconridge Drive at about 10:50 p.m. when the driver sped off, striking him.

The desperate efforts of nearby officers and parademics were unsuccessful and he succumbed to his injuries around an hour later in hospital, Calgary Police said in a statement this morning.

“The profound grief this has brought to all members of the Calgary Police Service and their families is unmeasurable. Please bear with us while we work through this difficult time,” the statement reads.

The driver remains at large. A description of the vehicle involved was not disclosed.

Road closures in the area are expected to remain in place Friday while the investigation continues.
