Calgary police investigating string of groping assaults on women walking alone

Article content continued

Investigators haven’t determined if a single man or multiple individuals are responsible for the 15 assaults.

Groping is listed as sexual assault under the Criminal Code of Canada and is punishable by time in jail.

Police are asking victims of similar attacks to call 911 immediately or, if unable to call at the time of the attack, to call the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 to report it — even if the assault occurred days or weeks ago.

Until police are able to track down the suspect or suspects, they are offering safety tips for people walking in their community.

It is advised that people walk with others and stick to populated and well-lit areas. If a person is carrying belongings in their arms, they are more vulnerable to an attack, so police encourage people to limit the number of items they bring with them. And stay alert of your surroundings.

If you are attacked, police suggest making loud noises to attract attention, dropping possessions, taking note of the physical attributes of the assailant and what they’re wearing, and calling 911 as soon as possible.
