Before defunding, chief calls for discussion on role of Calgary police

Neufeld was non-committal toward supporting similar ideas in Calgary.

Instead, he said Calgary police needs to first “define” its role.

“Once we do that, I think then that question of ‘how do we apportion money or resources’ becomes far more clear,” Neufeld said.

“As long as I think we’re talking about defunding the police before we define what we want them to do and what we don’t want them to do … I don’t think we’ll make much progress.”

Neufeld said a more integrated approach could be more suitable for calls relating to mental health, addictions, poverty, homelessness and trauma.

LJ Parker, an organizer with Calgary Supports Black Lives Matter, told the commission that more transparency is needed surrounding police budgets.
