Two more COVID-19 deaths in Alberta as province reports 108 new cases

Alberta reported two more COVID-19 deaths on Thursday and 108 new cases of the respiratory illness.

There were 1,158 active cases in the province, according to the latest update released on Thursday.

The total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in Alberta now stands at 237.

Across the province, 49 people are being treated in hospital for COVID-19, including seven who are in ICU beds.

The province conducted 10,089 tests over the past 24 hours.

New daily cases of the illness in Alberta have ranged widely over the past week, from a high of 144 to a low of 69.

No matter what the number, most of the cases being reported each day have been linked to the spread of coronavirus through social gatherings, from weddings and funerals to simple family get-togethers, the province’s top doctor said earlier this week.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw warned that those get-togethers were seeing “a particularly high attack rate,” as the virus continues to spread among friends and family members.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health will release her latest update on Thursday at a news conference scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. MT.

The numbers released each day account for cases counted until the end of the previous day; so the numbers are always 24 hours behind.

As noted, those numbers have gone up and down over the last few days.

The highest recent total was the 144 new cases counted on Thursday and reported the next day, the biggest single-day total since mid-July.

That unnerving total was followed by:

  • Friday, Aug. 21: 93 new cases.
  • Saturday, Aug. 22: 106 new cases.
  • Sunday, Aug. 23: 69 new cases.
  • Monday, Aug. 24: 73 new cases.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 25: 127 new cases.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 26, 108 new cases.

The total number of active cases across the province has changed little over the past week.

That active case count on Thursday was 1,146. In the following days the total was:

  • Friday, Aug. 21: 1,131 active cases.
  • Saturday, Aug. 22: 1,160 active cases.
  • Sunday, Aug. 23: 1,176 active cases.
  • Monday, Aug. 24: 1,143 active cases.
  • Tuesday, Aug. 25: 1,176 active cases.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1,158 active cases.

The regional breakdown of active cases reported on Wednesday was:

  • Edmonton zone: 625
  • Calgary zone: 362
  • North zone: 137
  • Central zone: 27
  • South zone: 20
  • Unknown: five
