Police look for witness after senior critically injured in CTrain station assault

Calgary police are looking to speak with a witness to a serious assault on a CTrain platform on the weekend that left an elderly man in critical condition.

Police said an elderly man was on the platform at the Sunnyside CTrain station at 9 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by another man.

He fell onto the concrete platform and sustained severe head injuries, police said. He remains in hospital in critical condition.

Basil Sweezey, 36, of Calgary was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

Police said after reviewing security camera images, it’s believed another man was on the platform just before the attack happened and may have witnessed it.

Police have released photos of the possible witness and are hoping to speak with him.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.

Sweezey is set to appear in court on Aug. 26.
