A man and his dog are dead after a shooting in the southwest community of Crestmont on Wednesday afternoon, according to Calgary police.
The shooting happened in the 500 block of Cresthaven Place S.W. around 1:30 p.m., police said.
Police and paramedics responded and the man was declared dead at the scene.
Police believe the suspect or suspects fled the area in a vehicle, which may be related to an abandoned vehicle that was later recovered by the Cochrane RCMP.
Police believe the shooting was not random.
“This shooting took place in the middle of the day in a neighbourhood area where people were out walking their dogs. We are currently speaking with a number of witnesses who were in the area at the time of the shooting and are asking anyone with information to contact police,” Staff Sgt. Colin Chisholm said in a release.
“We will not tolerate this kind of reckless disregard for public safety and will dedicate as many resources as it takes to finding the person or persons responsible.”
Police said they won’t identify the victim for now, as his family are still in the process of being notified.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously 1-800-222-8477 or www.calgarycrimestoppers.org.
